*Thursday 26th March, **Four Mothers*

We always aim for variety in our choice of films and having visited Wales (with Tom Basden’s *The Ballad of Wallis Island)* and Scotland (with *I Swear*, a moving Scottish comedy-drama based on the life of the Tourette syndrome campaigner, John Davidson), next up is an Irish film, *Four Mothers*. Writer, Edward (played by James McArdle) is on the verge of literary success and a writer’s tour, when he finds he has to take care of his widowed mother. Taking advantage of his situation, his three friends, keen to head off to a dissolute Pride holiday on the Canary Islands, leave their mothers with him for the weekend. Dealing with his own anxieties alongside the formidable personalities of the four opinionated ladies leads to comedy, chaos, confusion and a good deal of compassion.

‘Inspired by Gianni Di Gregorio’s 2008 *Pranzo di ferragosto* (*Mid-August Lunch*) … the writing is sharp and witty, with not a word out of place … McArdle has an extremely warm presence and there is immense sincerity in his embodiment of Edward’s conflicts. It is a joy watching him be a doting son, semi-successful writer and bad interviewee … In all the complex themes that it deals with (aging parents, loneliness, homosexuality), *Four Mothers* never loses its sensitivity … an earnest and generous film … with a lot of heart.’ *Film Ireland *
‘The film is a lovely dramedy with a lot to say about aging, chasing your dreams and how complacency can keep you from realizing your full potential … The film can be laugh out loud funny, but it’s also shot through with Irish melancholy about lives lived and roads not taken.’ *Forbes magazine*
‘On some level, most of us will identify with *Four Mothers*. Be that from caring for our own elderly family members or choosing to turn a blind eye to what’s really eating us in life, the film tenderly speaks to those human parts that comedies rarely touch, and if they do it’s never as skillfully as this … Thornton and Thornton (the directors) have crafted a charm-filled delight here … I was left with a smile, and a lesson — all hail the 90-minute movie!’ *Snack*
