This year’s Poppy Appeal, organised by the Royal British Legion, was launched, nationally, on Thursday 22^nd October and our village appeal will run from Saturday 31^st October until Tuesday 10^th November every day except Sunday 8^th November
As in previous years, I and a team of volunteers will be manning a stand outside Londis offering a wide range of poppy appeal items to raise funds for this worthy charity which seeks to recall and repay the sacrifice of so many men and women of the Armed Services both past and present. It offers them, and their families physical, mental and financial support when needed.
There will be a number of events during the week but, of the main events the first is the Remembrance Service at 10.00 on Sunday 8^th November at St John the Baptist; led by Rev’d Clare Challis. This will be followed by an Act of Remembrance and wreath-laying at the village’s War Memorial by the church.
On Wednesday 11^th November at 11.00, there will be a further Act of Remembrance on the Green. This marks the Armistice and the hour of the effective end of the First World War. It will be a much simpler event, the sounding of the Last Post, during which the Flag will be lowered to half mast, a two-minute silence, sounding of the Reveille. End with the national anthem. We are grateful to Steve Greenwood who will be the bugler on both occasions.
Other fundraising events during the week will include a Meat Raffle in The Castle Inn on Sunday 1^st November at 17.00. We are grateful to Graham Reeve of Ron Reeve’s Butchers, Clanfield for generously providing the prizes. Tickets are available, at the bar now.
Also, in the Castle Inn on Thursday 5^th November, will be a special Pub Quiz. It’ll start promptly at 19.30 so please be there well before that. Teams of 6 (about!) quizzers and entry is £5.00 a head. Some really good prizes will be offered to the 1^st , 2^nd and 3^rd placed teams and, it’ll be a lot of fun.
I’d like to thank everyone for their generous donations over the past many years and hope, that if you are passing the stand outside Londis or going into any local business premises, you will continue your generosity and wear your poppy with pride.
Thank you.
