*ROYAL BRITISH LEGION – POPPY APPEAL WEEK 2026*
This year’s Poppy Appeal, organised by the Royal British Legion, will run from Saturday 31^st October until Tuesday 10^th November.
As in previous years I, and a team of volunteers will be manning a stand outside Londis offering a wide range of poppy appeal items to raise funds for this worthy charity which seeks to recall and repay the sacrifice of so many men and women of the Armed Services both past and present. It offers they, and their families physical, mental and financial support when needed.
There will be two main events during the week, the first is the Remembrance Service at 10.00 on Sunday 8^th November at St John the Baptist; led by Rev’d Clare Challis. This will be followed by an Act of Remembrance and wreath-laying at the village’s War Memorial by the church.
On Tuesday 11^th November at 11.00, there will be a further Act of Remembrance on the Green. This marks the Armistice and the hour of the effective ending of the First World War. It will be a much simpler event, the sounding of the Last Post, during which the Flag will be lowered to half mast, a two-minute silence, sounding of the Reveille; it will end with the National Anthem. We are grateful to Steve Greenwood who will be the bugler on both occasions.
Thanks to Sarah Mayes there will be two additional fund-raising events at the Castle Inn, Finchdean Road. The first is a Pub Quiz which will be on Thursday 29^th October starting at 19.00 and the other will be a Meat Raffle on Sunday 1^st November; the first ticket will be drawn at 17.00. I will be putting further details out on these events nearer the time.
We could always do with more volunteers to man the poppy stand so please contact me on the email address below if you feel you could offer an hour of your time during the week.
I’d like to thank everyone for their generous donations over the past many years and hope, that if you are passing the stand outside Londis or going into any local business premises, you will continue your generosity and wear your poppy with pride.
Thank you.
