*Wednesday 28th October -** The Tuner*
Thank you to everyone who has supported Compton Film Club so far this year (particularly our friends in Rowlands Castle) – in the cold, the rain and then the endless heatwaves! We’ve had our usual break over the summer, but are back for another foray into community cinema with some varied choices from around the world this autumn.
Our September film is *The Christophers*, a black comedy directed by Steven Soderbergh, starring Ian McKellen as Julian Sklar, a reclusive artist whose fabled lost paintings are much sort after and Michaela Coel as Lori – a forger who is enlisted by Sklar’s estranged children (James Corden and Jessica Gunning) in a bid to secure an inheritance for themselves. The film has had fantastic reviews ‘… there are sublime performances from its leads, Ian McKellen and Michaela Coel, both absolutely at the top of their game.’ *Empire* ‘What unrolls … is a vivid and quick-witted chamber piece, a (mostly) two-person battle of wills, full of reversals and revelations and sly, art-world-teasing humour … What Picasso said of painting can be equally true of a film: “Art is a lie that makes us realise the truth.”’ *British Film Institute*
In October we are showing *The Tuner*, about a piano-tuning duo starring Dustin Hoffman and Leo Woodall. It’s a ‘fun thriller’ and one we thought you would all enjoy. ‘Leo Woodall’s breakout TV roles in *The White Lotus * and *One Day* offered a megawatt charisma, but for his biggest film role to date he dims it to a soft glow with a gentle performance opposite Dustin Hoffman as one of a pair of New York piano tuners. And what a pair they are; they are a real pleasure to watch in an easy, unforced drama that mixes rom-com moments with a relaxed crime thriller.’ *The Guardian*
Come and join your friends, neighbours and fellow film enthusiasts. Refreshment and chat beforehand – the bar opens at 7.30pm, films starts at 8pm.
