Good afternoon everyone
As you’ll be aware, the Royal British Legion’s Poppy Appeal 2025 started, nationally, on Thursday 23rd October and will continue until Wednesday 12th November. A big thank you to all the businesses in Rowlands Castle and The George at Finchdean for accepting trays of Poppies and collecting cans. You will also have noticed the large poppies on the lamposts on the main roads in our village. These were funded by a generous donation from the Rowlands Castle Association so a big thank you to them as well.
From 09.00 tomorrow (when the Street licence becomes effective) the Poppy stand will be open outside Londis, and will be there everyday this week until 17.00 thanks to a team of wonderful volunteers who, not only give up their time but brave the elements in support of this respected and worthy charity.
In addition to the Poppy stand there will be other events in the village:
On Thursday 6th November starting at 19.00 in the Castle Inn I will be running a Pub Quiz in aid of the Royal British Legion. Entry is £5.00 per person in teams of 6, or thereabouts! Prizes for the top 3 teams.
Sunday 9th November is Remembrance Sunday. The Remembrance Service will be held at St John the Baptist at 10.00, it will be conducted by the Priest-in-Charge, the Reverend Clare Challis. After the service wreaths will be laid at the war memorial on the corner of Redhill Road and Manor Lodge Road by Hampshire County Council, East Hampshire District Council, Rowlands Castle Parish Council, The Armed Forces, The Poppy Collectors and the Royal Voluntary Service. Everyone, of whatever faith or none are very welcome. There will be a hot drink in the Church Centre afterwards.
On that evening, and again at The Castle Inn at 16.00 for 17.00, there will be a meat raffle the proceeds of which will be going to the Royal British Legion. The meat products are kindly being provided by Reeves of Cowplain.
Tuesday 11th November is Armisitice Day and at 11.00 on The Green there will be a short Act of Remembrance, again conducted by Rev. Clare. It is a much simpler format giving the opportunity for reflection on the service given and still being given by members of the Armed Forces. We are grateful To Steve Greenwood who will sound the Last Post and Reveille both at the War Memorial and on The Green, and Ian Moore OBE as our Flagmaster.
If you have any questions about our village Poppy Week or would like more information on the Royal British Legion and its work, I will be manning the stand by Londis everyday from 09.00 – 10.00 and 16.00 – 17.00; please do come and speak to me.
This Grapevine post seems to be a lot of thank yous, the last one being to all of you, for your continuing support to this Charity – please wear your Poppy with Pride.
