Next u3a Meeting on Monday 19th May 2025

The next u3a meeting will take place on Monday 19th May at 2.00 pm in the Parish Hall. The meeting will begin with a short AGM followed by this month’s speaker Kitty Carruthers whose talk is entitled ‘The Olympics: Origins and Oddities’. The talk will aim to cover the establishment of the Games, the early medals awarded for ‘sports’ like mountaineering and poetry, amateurism vs professionalism, the role of women, paralympics, notable athletes and heroic failures and drugs and politics. There will be an emphasis on the British contribution to the Games.

Kitty is a life member of the International Society of Olympic Historians and until recently an associate editor of the Society’s journal. She is the author of ‘British Olympic Heroes’ whose blurb reads ‘Great Britain is one of only a handful of countries to have participated in every Olympic Games – Winter and Summer alike. In all more than 500 Britons have won a gold medal.

After a short career in the Royal Navy, Kitty has spent much of her adult life in publishing, producing more than 200 titles ranging from Islamic affairs to bodice rippers, via falconry, festivals and Prince Philip.

Hope to see everyone including new members on the day. If you are new to the village or have not heard of the u3a come along and check us out.
