Compton Film Club Tuesday 21st October “Mr. Burton”

*COMPTON FILM CLUB*
*Tuesday 21st October, Mr Burton*

Thank you to everyone who came along to our first film of the autumn, *The Penguin Lessons*. Set in Argentina on the verge of a military coup, it crossed from light to shade and Steve Coogan and Juan Salvador (the penguin) were both humorous and touching – there were few dry eyes in the house as we left.
Our next film is *Mr Burton*, a wonderful Welsh-British film that follows the early years of screen legend, Richard Burton and the teacher who inspired and encouraged him. Played by Tony Jones, Philip Burton was Richard Jenkins inspirational English teacher in Port Talbot, South Wales, whose own frustrated dreams of the theatre were poured into the bright young miner’s son. Philip Burton made Richard his ward, gave him his name and sponsored the young actor through Oxford – not without a certain amount of controversy. This is a film to fascinate movie buffs and film club enthusiasts alike. It also stars Lesley Manville and Harry Lawtey as Richard.
‘Marc Evans’s film is a lovely thing. The glistening score, composed by John Hardy, was recorded by the BBC National Orchestra of Wales. A note-perfect screenplay from the Tom Bullough and Josh Hyams follows the great actor from 1942, when he was a 17-year-old Port Talbot schoolboy, to 1951, as he hell-raises his way to Stratford-upon-Avon for a breakthrough performance as Prince Hal in Henry IV. Jones and Manville are predictably excellent.’ *The Irish Times*
Come and join your friends, neighbours and fellow film enthusiasts for refreshment and chat beforehand – the bar opens at 7.30pm, film starts at 8pm.
