COMPTON FILM CLUB
Monday 13th May, The Holdovers
Wednesday 19th June, Wicked Little Letters
Thank you to everyone who came along to our March showing of The Great Escaper with Michael Caine and Glenda Jackson. The film and performances did not disappoint – we also had a fantastic turnout and nearly ran out of chairs!!
After the Easter break we are back with The Holdovers, a highly-acclaimed, comic-drama set over Christmas in an elite American school in the 1970s, when the ‘holdovers’ – those staying behind when all other students leave for the holiday – are left with the school’s most unpopular, cantankerous teacher played brilliantly by Paul Giamatti. Directed by Alexander Payne, the film also stars Dominic Sessa as a wayward teen and and Da’Vine Joy Randolph as the school cook. As their stories unfold, they find family where they might least expect it.
‘ … the sympathy, richness and gentleness of this picture are still a marvel: a grownup drama for grownup people … it’s a pleasure to see [Giamatti] play a movie lead, his first for a while, and his prominence in this really good film is a signal that cinema could be moving back to a more approachable world of authentic drama and analogue talent.’ The Guardian
In June we will be showing Wicked Little Letters starring Olivia Colman and Jesse Buckley among an all-star cast. Set in the 1920s in Littlehampton, Little Letters is the true tale of a foul-mouthed scribbler. The poison pen letters create havoc in genteel Littlehampton (well it was 1920 …), setting neighbour against neighbour in a riot of colourful language and fabulous performances. Join us for ‘the comedy of the year’ – bring your earplugs if easily shocked!
Join us for a drink at 7.30pm, film starts at 8pm. We are also offering the chance to browse and borrow from our library of DVDs collected over the years. If you missed one of the films we have shown (and still have a DVD player!) do come and take a look.
